How do you deal with death daily and not be super depressed?

At this moment I confess that I ask this because I'm in the depths of severe depression right now. I feel like if I was a funeral director (a direction which I considered for a while) I would be in even worse shape. I know we are all different and some people are better suited emotionally to handle it, but it must get to you sometimes. Does it? And how do you deal?

Thank you,

Erik

Erik. Depression sucks. I used to think that optimistic extroverts were the best suited for the funeral business. Ten years licensed, I'm not so sure. Now, I think that optimistic extroverts have the best chance to succeed in this business, but the best funeral directors are the ones who invest themselves in the people they serve. Introverts, melancholic personalities ... personality types and tendencies matter, but the core element to a good funeral director is the intangible ability to connect with those they serve and invest in that connection.

Thanks Caleb. That makes sense. I've always been attracted to the rituals surrounding death and cemeteries and whatnot. That's why when I got out of high school like 30 years ago I thought about getting into that business. The funeral director at one of the local funeral homes was this excellent guy named Nick Soucy and I went to him to talk about the funeral business. He was a University of Maine football player when he decided to look into being a funeral director. As a junior they asked him what he planned to do with his life and he jokingly said he was going to be a funeral director. But then he decided to look into it and that's what he ended up doing. He went to mortuary college in Boston. He was different than everyone else there because everyone else had a family funeral business they were going to eventually inherit. He went into it not knowing anything about the business. And he was GREAT at it. He really knew how to connect with people and had a great sense of humor. He said no matter how bad things were he could get people to smile. Sadly he passed away several years ago.

Three Rules

One. No proselytizing: Religious belief, spirituality and nonbelief are sacred.  because they are sacred, we respect them.  Because they are sacred we don't push them on others.

Two. No Advertising: DEATHub is a space where we can talk about personal stories, personal feelings and ideas.  Those stories, feelings and ideas won't be exploited for personal or corporate gain.

Three. No Assholes: DEATHub only works if we are understanding and empathetic in our posts, comments, and when we're incidentally offended by another.  We are a group that is full of good people, who have deep and sensitive stories.  This is a place for those stories.
